JUL 25 08 i think my decision to blog was rushed and foolish; i don't enjoy blogging, nor am i particularly good at it. but because i'm unemployed, it can help to pass the day. and because there is nothing more exciting to record here, i'll blog about a meal i recently enjoyed in chicago. after an interview at sram (a bicycle components manufacturer), i was treated to dinner at a restaurant named coobah, near wrigley field. coobah, as the name suggests, serves cuban and pan-latin cuisine. i hadn't eaten cuban before this trip, but was unsurprised by its bold flavors. for dinner, i enjoyed jibarito, a chicago invention that sandwiches "fiery chicken" between caramelized plantains. and true to its description, the chicken was spicy. it was hotter than a mixed-race teenager. ba-doom! it was hotter than the checks i write! the combination of flavors was remarkable, though, and the spice of the dish, paired with warm plantain, was a great complement to a muggy day-turned-cool night.

JUL 03 08 in the days of yore, back when a cable modem was hotter than a new pair of jordans, i amassed a gigantic collection of tapes and cd's. i thought i'd eventually become a music supervisor, but the idea never progressed any further than day-dreams. so when i was contacted by nike and asked to submit work, i included a compilation of music with my portfolio, hoping to broaden my appeal. i've recently tracked down the songs, which are available to download: here
JUL 02 08 could this damned day be more moribund?
JUL 01 08 on november 14, 2007, houstonian joe horn shot and killed two men who attempted to flee the area after they burgled his neighbor's home. despite numerous warnings from from an emergency dispatcher, mr. horn left the confines of his home and exclaimed to the thiefs, "move, and you're dead," before shooting each man in the back. per texas law, mr. horn is not culpable in the murders because of the so called castle doctrine, which allows for the use of deadly force to protect one's property.

JUN 30 08 damien hirst, the english artist who is widely known for displaying dead animals in formaldehyde, has chosen to forgo the traditional methods by which most contemporary art is sold. instead of selling works through a gallery, which dictate a set price, hirst will place two collections of art on the sotheby's auction block. included in the sale is "the golden calf," a young bull sealed in formaldehyde and encapsulated in a gold-plated box, estimated to sell for 24 million dollars. in august of 2007, hirst's "for the love of god," a human skull cast in platinum and covered in 8,601 diamonds, sold for $100,000,000 to an unnamed investment group.
JUN 29 08 in the news - the new york times reports that a classified operation, approved in late 2007, would allow american forces to hunt key al queda members inside pakistan's borders. the mission has, instead, been prevented by infighting within the bush administration, as well as earlier disagreements between the intelligence community and then-secretary of defense, donald rumsfeld. the report comes amid accusations that american airstrikes wrongly targeted— and killed— several members of the pakistani army along pakistan's northern border. al queda, which perpetrated the terror attacks of sept 11, has relocated to pakistan in the years following the invasion of afghanistan. according to internet reports, the bush administration is said to be angered over the times decision to publish the article. |
